Acupuncture, Massage and Postnatal Care

Post Natal Treatments

After birth, when a woman’s body has exerted a tremendous effort, it is wise to protect, nourish and repair the body. Many cultures observe the postnatal period of about 40 days as a special and sacred period of confinement, where rest, tonics, good nutrition and massage all play a part in restoring vitality in the weeks following birth.

I offer a range of treatments for nurturing women's health in the days following birth, miscarriage, stillbirth or termination.
The following treatments are specific to this immediate postnatal period.
Longer term Postnatal Care however is an ongoing process of supporting the emotional and physical needs of a woman. During the first year following childbirth, many adjustments are made and depending on the impact of the birth, many mothers would benefit from support during this time. Acupuncture treatment is aimed at supporting the ongoing demands on physical body, and any impacts that the birth and mothering has on perinatal mental health.
Whilst 'it takes a village to raise child'- supporting mother in this ultimate life transition is essential to well being of mother and baby for the years to come.

Closing the Bones Ceremony

'Closing the Bones' is a postnatal hip massage from Ecuador which uses a Rebozo (a shawl) to gently rock and momentarily 'bind' the mother's hips, together with a massage of the abdomen and hips.

The need to honour and nourish the mother's body and soul is the foundation of this treatment, and is a fine example of how many cultures put wisdom into practice in this special period.
The massage is designed to help return a new mother to her centre, both physically and energetically.

This massage is also helpful to nurture the body even long after
  • birth
  • miscarriage
  • termination
  • menopause

I am able to provide this beautiful massage and ceremony in your home, either by myself or with another female masseuse as support. Please call me if you'd like to discuss your needs.

Traditional Chinese Medicine for Post Natal Care

Mother warming’

This treatment is offered from day 5 after birth, as a gentle and comforting treatment to restore the essential 'kidney qi' in the body which has been used during pregnancy and birth. Moxibustion is a non invasive treatment which utilises the burning of a herb (Artemis Vulgaris) to gently stimulate specific body points. In this postnatal treatment, the moxa is focussed over a mother’s abdomen. It aids recovery, increases vitality and restores energy to the body. Many people experience it as deeply restoring, calming and peaceful. If you wish, during this treatment you can choose to have acupuncture to restore your body and support the systems which make your milk supply.

Following treatment, I supply moxa and an information sheet for you, should you wish to continue the benefits in your own home.

Post Natal Restorative Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese Medicine restores your body at a time when you need nourishing the most.  Working alongside Traditional Chinese Medicine Dietary advice, nourishing and restoring maternal blood after birth is an essential part of any postnatal recovery programme.

Acupuncture treatment is suitable for all women and would ideally form part of the 40 days postpartum programme of care- or 'lunar month'.
Traditionally, the very early postpartum phase is a time of clearing before embarking on nourishing. If you still have bleeding following the birth of your baby, please contact me to discuss what  and when treatment is suitable for you.

Acupuncture treatment includes an information sheet about restoring blood with your diet and improving milk supply.

Stress Incontinence

Around 40% of women suffer with Stress Incontinence / urine leakage after the birth of their baby, This condition affects vaginal births and c-section births alike. There is little that can be offered in standard care beyond Kegel exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor. Research shows that acupuncture treatment, especially if taken in the 6 weeks following the birth, can greatly reduce the leakage of urine, and improves the success of physiotherapy interventions.

Postnatal Depression and Good Mental Health

New mothers need time to adjust to the demands on their bodies, minds and lives, and all too often there is not enough focus on taking care of women at this time. Women find postpartum acupuncture to be useful where there are psychological adjustments and/ or postnatal depression, and see treatment to be supportive of this transition time.
