Recent research shows that the use of complementary therapies during labour, including acupressure, significantly reduces epidural rates, caesarean section rates, the need for augmentation and any resuscitation of the newborn.
Complementary therapies for labour and birth study: a randomised controlled trial of antenatal integrative medicine for pain management in labour.  Levett KM et al, BMJ Open. 2016 Jul 12;6(7)

Acupuncture use during labour (Intrapartum Acupuncture) offers a wide range of choices to help a woman to effectively labour and can significantly decrease the need for drug administration.
Examples where acupuncture can effectively reduce the need for synthetic drug administration for high presentation/ placenta retention, and the feeling of requiring pain relief medication. (Betts, 2006)

It is always a privilege to attend a birth, and during labour and birth, I have been fortunate to help labours progress smoothly with the use of acupressure and acupuncture to:
  • help ease pain
  • facilitate effective uterine contractions and a smooth labour
  • correct malpositioning
  • treat retention of the placenta

Birthing partners can engage positively with you and assist your during your labour, if acupressure for labour is taught to them as part of an antenatal programme.
I regularly teach acupressure for labour to birth partners, and have taught 'Intrapartum Acupressure' for NHS midwives.
Please contact me for if you would like to organise a session for your birth partner, antenatal group, or other organisation.

How I can attend and support your birth as an acupuncturist

Every woman has the ability to determine her birth wishes, including who she wishes to attend her labour, wherever she chooses her labour to be. Midwives are there to support your birth wishes, including having acupuncture during your labour, and are able to facilitate this if it is written into your birth plan.

I request that your midwives are made aware of your wishes and it is written. I am always happy to work with your medical team, and will liaise with your midwives to ensure that my work is clinically appropriate at each stage of your labour.

As my work as a doula requires me to commit to being on call, I may be available to attend your birth in 2 ways:
You can call me when you know you are in labour and request I come to you. If I am available, and not attending another birth I may be able to come to you. Please contact to find my current availability and discuss how I could help you.
You can book me for your due month, so I will be on call for you from 38-42 weeks- this is the best way I can guarantee I can support your labour.

As each birth is unique, please feel free to contact me with any questions you have about how acupuncture and acupressure for labour can help you.
